The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Witnesses Significant Partnership Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several major political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
